Tortuga Cannabis Company's growth and impact in 2023
SUMMARY: Medical cannabis was recently legalized in Mississippi and Brandy McGill sits down with the owner of one local dispensary to learn the impact on the city and surrounding areas. Governor Tate Reeves signed medical marijuana into law in February 2022. The owner, Mick Baldwin, discusses the careful regulation process and describes medical marijuana as a natural miracle plant. There are only two testing facilities in the state that are responsible for testing products for nearly 400 dispensaries, cultivators, and processing facilities. Baldwin says the city of Petal was very helpful in getting his dispensary up and running. He encourages people to learn more about Tortuga and other dispensaries.

SUMMARY: Local shoppers in Tupelo are hopeful for a Target store after years of anticipation. Target filed plans in September for a store in the Barnes Crossing area near North Gloster Street and Interstate 22. The Tupelo City Council recently approved an agreement to incentivize the retailer, including infrastructure improvements to alleviate traffic. While some community members express excitement about the shopping options, Target has not confirmed its plans for Tupelo, as its future store openings do not currently include the city. Despite recent mixed earnings reports, company officials remain optimistic about their long-term prospects.
The City of Tupelo is now playing the waiting game for a possible Target store.
SUMMARY: A local nonprofit, Petal Healing Garden, is collaborating with the Forest County Agricultural Extension Office on the Grow a Row program to combat food insecurity. Volunteers can participate after completing a food safety course led by Jesse Tisdale. The program not only helps with food donations but also offers a chance for the community to reconnect with gardening, filling a gap left by the loss of agricultural education in local schools. Proceeds from the initiative will benefit the Edwards Street food pantry and the Petal Children’s Task Force in Hattiesburg.
One local agricultural extension office is teaming up with a local vegetable garden owner to train others on growing produce to combat hunger in the Pine Belt.
