DPS moving to Pearl
SUMMARY: The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is planning to move from its current building on Woodrow Wilson, which has severe foundation issues, asbestos problems, and gas leaks, to a new site in Pearl. The existing headquarters, built in 1976, needs to be demolished, and the land may be sold for redevelopment. The new DPS site will consolidate all divisions under one roof for the first time, with costs now between $65 and $70 million. The timeline for the new building's completion has shifted to late summer or early fall of 2025. The state is considering commercial development for the vacated site.

Editorial: New laws
SUMMARY: Mississippi does not have a ballot initiative or recall process, making it crucial for citizens to stay informed about legislative actions. Over 400 bills were passed in the recent session, effective July 1st, including appropriations, law enforcement pay raises, and Medicaid reforms. Key highlights include changes to Public Employees' Retirement System employer contribution rates, the expansion of the Capitol Complex Improvement District, and increased pay for state troopers and narcotics officers. Additional funds were allocated for the removal of blighted properties in Jackson and constructing a pedestrian crossover in Richland.
