Tips for keeping pets safe in the heat
SUMMARY: With rising temperatures, it’s important to consider the safety of pets. WTV’s Jake White interviewed a local veterinarian in Lee County, emphasizing the need for caution during hot weather. Walking dogs on hot pavement can cause severe pain, ulcerations, and wounds on their paws. A useful test is to place the back of your hand on the ground; if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. The veterinarian suggests walking dogs in the early morning or evening and bringing plenty of water. Even just over five minutes on hot pavement can be dangerous for dogs.

Flu shuts down St. Andrew’s Episcopal School
SUMMARY: Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School is quiet as an influenza outbreak leads to the closure of all grades on Friday. The decision was made to help students recover and minimize community spread. Following advice from school nurses, high schoolers were sent home Thursday, with elementary students following Friday, halting classes until Monday. The Mississippi Department of Health reports that flu cases in the metro area have doubled recently, likely due to post-holiday school attendance. Health officials advise getting flu shots and keeping sick children at home to protect health as case numbers are expected to decrease with warmer weather in March.

Republican bill would block illegal immigrants from receiving tax breaks | National
SUMMARY: The Safeguarding American Workers’ Benefits Act, reintroduced by Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, aims to prevent illegal immigrants in the U.S. from receiving Child Tax Credits (CTC) and Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC). The legislation mandates that parents and children need valid Social Security numbers for employment to qualify for these tax benefits. Rep. Clay Higgins has introduced a similar bill in the House. The U.S. Joint Committee on Taxation estimates the bill could save nearly $28 billion over ten years. This initiative aligns with Republican efforts to cut federal spending while addressing immigration policies under President Trump.
