TikTok loses bid to strike down ban | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: TikTok’s future in the U.S. is uncertain after a federal appeals court upheld a law requiring the platform to divest from its China-based parent company, ByteDance, or face a ban. The law, enacted by President Biden in April due to concerns over data privacy and potential sharing with the Chinese government, has been contested by TikTok as a violation of users’ First Amendment rights. However, judges ruled it protects American freedoms from foreign threats. TikTok has until January 19 to comply but plans to appeal. Meanwhile, President Trump has shifted from advocating a ban to supporting a sale to an American entity.
TikTok is another step closer to potentially being banned in the U.S. The platform lost its bid on Friday to strike down a law requiring TikTok to break ties with its parent company. FOX’s Jared Halperin has the latest.

Ahead of expected council vote, Austin Planning Commission weighs hospital safety
SUMMARY: KXAN’s “Preventing Disaster” investigation highlighted a deadly car crash into an Austin hospital ER, sparking city council discussions on safety barriers called bollards. These barriers could prevent such crashes, but many medical facilities resist their implementation due to aesthetic concerns. In response to the investigation, Austin’s City Council is considering an ordinance to require bollards at new hospitals and emergency rooms. While bollards are shown to be effective, critics argue the scope should extend to other public facilities. The measure, supported by local lawmakers, aims to prevent similar incidents, despite pushback from medical centers and some council members.

Parts of Southeast Texas coast under a ‘Low Water Advisory’
SUMMARY: Strong winds in Galveston caused a low water advisory in Galveston Bay, particularly impacting mariners and ferry services. A ferry line suspended its service due to low water levels. The advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. today, with water levels expected to rise by dinner time and continue increasing through the evening. The low water is a result of strong north winds, which pushed water out of the bay into the Gulf of Mexico. It will take about 12 hours for the water to return, with higher levels anticipated later today.
Meteorologist Pat Cavlin explains what a low water advisory is and why one was issued on Wednesday.
