Sun & Cloud Mix Monday with Coastal Storms, Tracking PTC Six: Sunday Evening Forecast 9/8/2024
SUMMARY: Meteorologist Grant Skinner shared an update on potential Tropical Cyclone 6, which is expected to bring tropical storm-force winds to Mexico over the next 48 hours. The National Hurricane Center has issued advisories, as the system is likely to strengthen while moving towards the Texas and Louisiana coast. It may reach Category 1 strength upon landfall, affecting areas from Houston to south of Lafayette, but will weaken quickly afterward. The Gulf Coast is anticipating increased rain chances, with up to 70% expected mid-week, along with rough surf and gusty winds. Cooler temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s are also expected.
Most places north of I-10 were able to see more sunshine today, so it was also a lot warmer. This evening and tonight, we will see partly cloudy skies and a small chance for a coastal shower. Isolated showers and a few storms are possible Monday as a surface trough sits over the area and a boundary lingers offshore, but most places north of I-10 should remain mostly dry. Highs will sit in the mid- to upper-80’s with low-80’s along the coast. Rip current risk will be moderate through Tuesday then high by Wednesday. As the week progresses, rain chances will increase as tropical moisture streams into the area. The best chances for showers and storms are on Wednesday and Thursday. The higher rain chances will keep temperatures cooler in the low- to mid-80’s for most of the work week. By next weekend, we will see lower rain chances and temperatures in the upper-80’s. In the tropics, we are tracking Potential Tropical Cyclone Six and two other areas. PTC Six is moving northwest at 5 mph and has 50 mph winds. The current model guidance keeps this system in the westernmost portions of the Gulf tracking it towards TX/LA. Tropical moisture will be drawn into the News 5 area bringing higher rain chances for Wednesday and Thursday. The next name is Francine. Two more areas are in the central and eastern Atlantic and do not pose a threat to the News 5 area. The area in the central Atlantic has a high chance of formation over the next seven days, and the area in the eastern Atlantic also has a medium chance of development.
The WKRG News 5 First Alert Storm Team covers part of southeast Mississippi, southwestern Alabama, and northwest Florida. You can also view the full Sunday evening forecast for the Gulf Coast here: https://tinyurl.com/5dp9smer
