Thursday 5 AM Tropical Update: Helene growing stronger

SUMMARY: Hurricane Helen is currently a Category 1 storm in the Gulf of Mexico, with winds reaching 345 miles from its center. It is expected to intensify to Category 2 and potentially Category 3 or 4 as it approaches Tallahassee this evening, moving quickly inland towards Atlanta. Significant storm surges are predicted, with up to 20 feet near the Big Bend area and 5 to 8 feet for Tampa. Almost all of Florida, Georgia, and parts of South Carolina are under tropical storm or hurricane warnings. Major flooding risks are developing in the Florida Panhandle and North Georgia mountains due to anticipated heavy rainfall.

Hurricane Helene is strengthening this morning over the eastern Gulf. The storm is still on track to make landfall along the Big Bend of FL as a major hurricane with winds over 115 mph and storm surge up to 20 feet!

The storm is sitting over very warm water temperatures and low wind shear. This will allow the storms to continue strengthening for the rest of the day. The big question remains how much can it grow. The storm is large with tropical storm force winds extending over 345 miles away from the center. The center has remained broad as well. If the core of the storm can contract some we will likely see the storm rapidly intensify Thursday afternoon. Either way the storms will likely be a category 3 at landfall, but a category 4 is still not impossible.

www.youtube.com – KSAT 12 – 2024-11-21 13:18:00

SUMMARY: Meteorologist Mia Montgomery reports a cool Thursday in San Antonio, with morning temperatures in the upper 30s and a light freeze in the Hill Country, marking the coldest morning since February. Sunny, dry conditions helped afternoon highs reach the low 70s. Temperatures will dip into the upper 50s by 8 p.m. and low to mid-50s by late evening. The coming days will remain chilly, with highs rebounding into the mid to upper 70s. A potential cold front may impact the area around Thanksgiving, but no rain is expected, and severe drought conditions persist.

After the coldest morning since February, low humidity, sunshine, and calm winds will help temperatures warm into the pleasant low 70s this afternoon. A gradual warming trend takes shape over the next several days as we monitor another front sometime around Thanksgiving. Here’s an update with Mia.
