Three-year National Folk Festival expected to bring $60 million to Jackson
SUMMARY: Mississippi will host the National Folk Festival for the first time, with Jackson as the venue from 2025-27. Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba announced that the festival, a free three-day event featuring music, dance, and traditional arts, will attract over 330,000 visitors and generate over $60 million in local economic impact. The nonprofit National Council for the Traditional Arts, which has organized the festival since 1934, chose Jackson after a competitive selection process. In addition to showcasing diverse cultural traditions, the festival’s second year will align with America’s 250th anniversary celebrations. The event will commence in November 2025.

Man paroled after killing father, stepmother deceased in Rankin County crash
SUMMARY: James Williams III, a Mississippi man who served nearly two decades for the 2002 murders of his father and stepmother, died in a car crash in Rankin County. The accident on Highway 18 involved Williams’ 2009 Honda Civic and a 2019 GMC Sierra, resulting in his death at the scene. The other vehicle’s occupants, Curtis and Ruth Jones, were hospitalized. Williams, who faced life sentences for the murders, was paroled in 2023 after the U.S. Supreme Court deemed life sentences for minors unconstitutional.
