Thompson introduces bill to strip Trump of Secret Service protection if imprisoned
SUMMARY: Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson introduced the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable (DISGRACED) Former Protectees Act after Donald Trump's conviction on May 30. The bill aims to remove Secret Service protection for Trump if he receives a federal prison sentence, addressing the logistical concerns of providing such protection during imprisonment. Secret Service officials stated the conviction wouldn't alter their protective duties. Some Mississippi officials, including Governor Tate Reeves, criticized Thompson's actions. Trump's sentencing is scheduled for July 11, with an appeal expected, coinciding closely with the Republican National Convention.
