Thompson endorsement up in air while Lumumba seeks reelection as Jackson mayor
SUMMARY: As the 2025 mayoral election approaches in Jackson, Mississippi, current Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba faces potential lack of endorsement from U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson. Thompson criticized the city’s failure to utilize available federal funds and resources and urged voters to consider new candidates. Lumumba’s administration has struggled with issues like a water crisis and rising homicide rates, despite some success in raising pay for city employees. Various candidates, including retired military and conservative figures, are emerging for the upcoming election, where the primary will be held in April and the general election in June.

The city anticipates $500,000 in annual gaming revenue during the initial years. Construction must begin within three years, with gaming operations launched within five years.
