SUMMARY: Hurricane Milton, currently a category 4 storm with winds up to 145 mph, is expected to make landfall tonight near Florida, prompting officials to close bridges and prepare for severe impacts. Florida Power and Light is staging emergency response units, while the National Guard is deployed for search and rescue efforts. The storm poses a significant threat of 10-15 ft storm surges, particularly affecting areas south of Tampa. Tornadoes have already been confirmed across southern Florida. Many residents are evacuating, but some choose to remain home despite the risks. FEMA is ready to assist in the aftermath of the storm.

Hurricane Milton hurled tornadoes and rain at the U.S. coast Wednesday on the storm’s steady, potentially catastrophic march toward Florida, where officials issued a final plea to residents to evacuate or face grim odds of survival.

The National Hurricane Center stressed that it was not certain where Milton’s center would come ashore Wednesday night because the storm’s path might “wobble,” but the entire Tampa Bay region and points south were at grave risk. Tropical storm-force winds were just off the coast around midday, the center said.
