SUMMARY: Memphis recently held a street naming ceremony for rappers 8Ball and MJG, sparking controversy from Mississippi’s Dooly County District Attorney, Matthew Barton. In an opinion piece, he criticized the decision, claiming it contributes to Memphis’s crime problem. Barton argued that honoring these artists romanticizes a culture of violence and drugs, undermining efforts to combat crime. He questioned how the city can expect to reduce violence while celebrating figures who glorify destructive lifestyles. While some locals support honoring the rappers, others share concerns about celebrating those they believe contribute negatively to community values. Barton concluded that the street naming was a mistake.
