Thelma Mothershed-Wair, Little Rock Nine member, dies at 83

SUMMARY: Thelma Mothershed, the oldest member of the Little Rock Nine, has passed away at the age of 83. She rose to national prominence as one of nine African-American who helped desegregate Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Mothershed later earned a master’s degree from Southern Illinois and spent 28 years teaching in the East St. Louis School District. She is the second member of the Little Rock Nine to die, Jefferson . Her contributions played a significant role in the movement, marking an important chapter in American history.

Mothershed-Wair became a national as one of the nine African American students involved in the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas in 1957. She died Saturday at a hospital in Little Rock due to complications from multiple sclerosis.
