The Meridian Chapter of the National Buffalo Soldiers honor those who came before them

SUMMARY: The Meridian chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers commemorated their heritage today at 1:30 p.m., gathering at the Harley-Davidson building and proceeding to Lauderdale County’s largest African-American cemetery. Established on July 24, 1992, by President George W. Bush, July 28 is officially recognized as Buffalo Soldiers Day. Terence Robert, the chapter’s secretary, explained that Buffalo Soldiers were members of the 9th and 10th Cavalry, formed during the Indian Wars as part of America’s first peacetime army after the Civil War. This group continues to ride in Mississippi, and their contributions deserve recognition and appreciation.

The Meridian chapter of the National Buffalo Soldiers celebrated Sunday by honoring many who came before it.
