The History of Mississippi’s Moon Trees

SUMMARY: Moon trees are grown from seeds that have traveled to or orbited the moon. Mississippi at least three such trees in Starkville and Cleveland, fostering educational opportunities. The seeds first orbited the moon during the Apollo 14 mission in 1971. After returning, the Forest Service germinated the seeds, planting them globally. In 1975, astronaut Stuart Roosa planted a sycamore at Mississippi , known as the โ€œmoon sycamore.โ€ Delta State University also received a moon tree seedling. Additionally, Bayou Academy in Cleveland got a sweetgum tree from the Orion spacecraft in 2022. These trees confirm seeds can grow normally after exposure to microgravity.
