SUMMARY: Mississippi MRA has a long history dating back to the 19th century, with the first organized celebration starting in 1908 in Buxy, Mississippi. The celebration commemorates the arrival of Pierre Le Mo Iberville in 1699, who is believed to be the first person to celebrate Carnival in the Americas. Today, the Gulf Coast Carnival Association celebrates with more than 100 floats and has been a source of pride for the citizens of Buxy and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. MRA in Mississippi may have started later than in other cities, but it was founded by the man who brought MRA to America, making the state deserving of credit.
