The Breakdown: Louisiana leading U.S. in flu cases for second December in a row
SUMMARY: For the second consecutive year, Louisiana leads the nation in early-season flu cases, despite being months away from peak flu season. The CDC reports Louisiana and Washington D.C. shared the highest flu activity last week, with over 11% flu test positivity, compared to 3.5% nationwide. Additionally, RSV positivity is at 18%, impacting emergency room visits, particularly among children aged four and under. The flu is particularly dangerous for young children and the elderly. Minimum wages are increasing in nearly half the states this year • Louisiana Illuminator
SUMMARY: In 2025, nearly half of U.S. states will raise their minimum wage, even as the federal minimum remains at $7.25 per hour. Many states, including traditionally red ones like Missouri and Alaska, approved increases in November. Michigan’s minimum wage will rise to $12.48 in February, and it’s set to reach $14.97 by 2028. A total of 30 states and D.C. have a higher minimum wage than the federal rate. Critics argue wage hikes will raise prices and reduce jobs, but advocates believe they help workers cope with inflation and boost the economy. Some states, like Alaska, also mandate paid sick leave.

Entergy is working on power outages across South Arkansas
SUMMARY: Winter storms in South Arkansas have caused power outages, with linemen working to restore electricity. The primary issues are ice accumulation on trees, which weigh down limbs onto power lines, rather than on the lines themselves. To report outages, users can use an app or call 1-800-09-OUTAGE. For safety, keep doors closed to conserve heat, and avoid using indoor heating devices unsafely. Avoid downed power lines, and allow crews to handle repairs. Power in Camden and ELO areas is expected to be restored by 10 p.m., while in Magnolia and Columbia County, restoration is anticipated by noon the next day.
