Texas Secretary of State, US Department of Justice on opposing sides ahead of Election Day
SUMMARY: Texas is firmly opposing the federal government ahead of election day, with the U.S. Department of Justice announcing plans to send monitors to oversee voting rights in Texas and 27 other states. Early voting in Bexar County has reached record numbers, with over 570,000 votes cast. The Texas Secretary of State’s office asserts that federal monitors cannot enter polling places or ballot counting stations, citing state election laws. This stance aligns with previous elections, where federal monitors were also not permitted. The outcome of this conflict between state and federal oversight remains uncertain.
With just a couple of days until Election Day, Texas and the United States Department of Justice are butting heads over who can and cannot be inside a polling location legally.

More than $225 million allocated to support rural law enforcement | Texas
SUMMARY: Texas has allocated over $225 million in grants to enhance law enforcement in rural areas, addressing salary and recruitment challenges. The Rural Law Enforcement Grant Program, established by SB 22 in 2023, aims to bridge funding gaps in under-resourced counties. In fiscal 2024, $125.7 million was awarded to 502 recipients, and $98.4 million in fiscal 2025 to 396 recipients. While the program has enabled significant salary increases and hiring, some sheriffs report that county officials are blocking funds for political reasons. Advocates suggest allowing direct applications from sheriffs for a more effective funding process.
