Texas oil, natural gas industry breaks record: $27.3 billion paid in taxes, royalties | Texas
SUMMARY: In fiscal 2024, Texas’ oil and natural gas industry set multiple records, including paying a record $27.3 billion in taxes and royalties, surpassing last year’s figure by nearly $1 billion. This amount is more than the total tax revenues of 34 states. These funds support essential services such as public schools, universities, and roads. The industry is a major contributor to the state’s education funds, with royalties going into the Permanent School Fund and Permanent University Fund. The industry also significantly funds local school districts and counties, especially in West Texas’ Permian Basin, where it constitutes the majority of the tax base.

What bail reform could look like in Texas
SUMMARY: During his State of the State address, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott labeled bail reform an emergency. On February 3, Sen. Joan Huffman introduced a comprehensive bail reform package, including five bills. Key proposals include SB 9, which restricts bail-setting powers, and SJR 1, denying bail to undocumented residents charged with felonies. SJR 5 allows judges to deny bail for violent and sexual offenders, while SB 1047 enhances Public Safety Reports to assist judges in bail decisions. Additionally, SB 40 prohibits local funding for organizations that pay bail. The proposals will be discussed at an upcoming Senate Criminal Justice hearing.

Watch Live: Meteorologist Chita Craft is tracking heavy downpours from Sugar Land to Spring
SUMMARY: There are slowdowns and congestion in southern Indiana, particularly on I-64 near Floyd County and US 150. Heavy snow is falling in the area, with snow accumulation on grassy surfaces along I-71 near the Gene Snyder and other areas south. Drivers should be cautious of wet, potentially hazardous conditions, as untreated surfaces may be slippery. Some drivers are advised to avoid the roads today, but for those heading out, extra time is needed to clean snow off vehicles. The accumulation on side streets is minor due to fewer cars, but caution is still recommended.
