Texas lawmaker makes push to remove death penalty in the state | FOX 7 Austin

SUMMARY: Williamson County Representative John Bucy advocates for abolishing the death penalty in Texas, citing both financial and moral concerns. He has filed a bill to end executions, arguing that it costs more to execute someone than to imprison them. This follows a Texas Supreme Court decision to move forward with Robert Robertson’s execution, despite claims of his innocence based on updated science. Since 1982, Texas has executed nearly 600 people, the most in the U.S. While death sentences have declined in recent years, Bucy believes growing public awareness of wrongful convictions may change attitudes toward the death penalty.

Maryland mayor to talk about accidental deportation

SUMMARY: Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man mistakenly deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration. Garcia’s deportation, admitted as an error, was later linked by the administration to MS-13 gang membership, which his attorney denies. A recent ruling by the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the Trump administration’s attempt to avoid answering questions under oath, with Judge Harvey Wilkinson criticizing the government’s actions. Deportation issues, including Garcia’s case, remain a contentious legal topic, with ongoing disputes over executive power and due process in the courts.

FOX News’ Shannon Bream tells FOX 4 that the Maryland mayor went to El Salvador to speak with the man who was mistakenly deported by the Trump Administration. FOX News Sunday airs at 8 a.m. on FOX 4.

Activists to ‘resist’ military presence on border with marches, public engagement

SUMMARY: Community activists are launching the “Journeys of Resistance” campaign to counter the perceived militarization of the Texas-Mexico border. From May 3-17, they will hold marches and meetings in several Texas cities, aiming to document abuse and demand government accountability. This initiative follows the deployment of thousands of active-duty troops to the border and increased collaboration between local governments and federal immigration authorities under the Trump administration. Activists argue this is creating fear and distrust in immigrant communities, with families avoiding public spaces out of fear of deportation. They stress the importance of community trust for effective law enforcement.
