SUMMARY: Republican Rep. Dustin Burrows claims he has secured enough votes to win the speakership, despite a significant loss to Rep. David Cook in a GOP caucus vote. Cook won the nomination by over 3-to-1, but Burrows asserts he has bipartisan support, releasing a list of 76 supporters, although some Republicans dispute their inclusion. Meanwhile, the House Democratic caucus announced it would support Burrows but not Cook. The turnover comes after current Speaker Dave Felin withdrew from the race, facing backlash from hard-right lawmakers following his impeachment support for Attorney General Ken Paxton.

The race for the Texas House Speakership has two candidates in the running: State Rep. David Cook and State Rep. Dustin Burrows.

SUMMARY: A missing 15-year-old girl from Katy, Texas, was found unharmed after nearly two weeks, with an Amber Alert and search efforts from local authorities. A private digital forensic investigator played a key role by accessing the girl’s Gmail account to track her location. Despite having no cell service, the girl used public Wi-Fi at various locations, including a grocery store and restaurants, which allowed the investigator to pinpoint her whereabouts. The information was then handed over to the police, leading to her safe return just in time for Christmas. The investigation is ongoing.

A Katy teenager who was last seen nearly two weeks ago has been found safe, authorities confirm.
The news was first confirmed by Texas Center 4 Missing on X. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez also confirmed that the girl had been located and was now with investigators.

SUMMARY: Members of the U.S. House Committee on Oversight are requesting a briefing from Texas’ maternal mortality committee about its decision to skip reviewing pregnancy-related deaths from 2022 and 2023, following the state’s abortion ban. The committee chose to focus on deaths in 2024 instead. Critics, including Rep. Jasmine Crockett, argue that this decision ignores deaths during a critical period and undermines efforts to reduce maternal mortality. They also express concerns that the state’s abortion restrictions are contributing to rising maternal deaths. The Texas maternal mortality committee has been criticized for its handling of this data amid increasing concerns.
