Texas hospitals must now ask patients whether they're in the US legally
SUMMARY: Starting today, Texas hospitals must ask patients about their citizenship status per a new state order aimed at collecting data on the costs of treating undocumented patients. Governor Abbott initiated this executive order to monitor expenses linked to healthcare for non-citizens. Despite this requirement, local hospitals emphasize that patients will not be denied care based on their answers. Critics, including the American Civil Liberties Union, argue that this order instills fear in communities. Hospitals like Houston Methodist and Memorial Hermann will comply by asking the citizenship question, but patients can decline to answer. Data will be reported quarterly starting in March.
Texas hospitals have spent months preparing for the change and have sought to reassure patients that it won’t affect their level of care.

SUMMARY: A mother is advocating for accountability after her son, a student at Williamson Elementary in Galena Park ISD, was allegedly denied bathroom access, leading to an accident where he sat in his own feces for hours. This incident follows a similar situation involving her daughter, which resulted in health issues. She has communicated with the school and is filing a report with the school constable, who acknowledged the severity of the situation. The district has not yet responded to her concerns.
The woman, who wanted to remain anonymous, said she didn’t get answers from school officials.

Monarch butterfly decline threatens food chain stability
SUMMARY: Over the past month, monarch butterflies have migrated from the northern US to Mexico, facing challenges due to habitat loss and a declining population. Meteorologists are concerned about the impact of this decline on food production, as one in three bites of food depends on pollinators. Historically found in Southeast Texas, monarchs have decreased by about 90% since the 1990s due to urban development. To combat this, planting native plants and milkweed can provide crucial food and shelter. Community initiatives, like butterfly gardens, aim to restore habitats and support pollinators, encouraging everyone to participate regardless of their living situation.
Admiring Monarch butterflies during the Fall in Texas should be easy to do.

Former HISD employees accused in teacher cheating scheme try to avoid cameras at first court hearing
SUMMARY: Former HISD educators, including basketball coach Vincent Grayson, have been arrested in a serious scheme where applicants paid to have others take teacher certification exams on their behalf. Grayson, the alleged ringleader, reportedly profited over a million dollars, charging $2,500 per applicant for this fraudulent service. Two assistant principals, Lea Roberts and Nicholas Newton, alongside testing coordinators Daren Wilhite and Taiwana Mason, are also implicated in the scheme, with the latter accused of accepting bribes to facilitate cheating. Prosecutors are building a case based on bank records and confessions from approximately 20 involved teachers.
Three of the five defendants accused in a yearslong Houston-based cheating scandal, involving hundreds of unqualified teachers getting certified to teach at schools statewide, appeared before a district court judge for the first time Friday.
