Texas hospitals must now ask patients whether they're in the US legally

SUMMARY: Starting today, Texas hospitals must ask patients about their citizenship status per a new state order aimed at collecting data on the costs of treating undocumented patients. Governor Abbott initiated this executive order to monitor expenses linked to healthcare for non-citizens. Despite this requirement, local hospitals emphasize that patients will not be denied care based on their answers. Critics, including the American Civil Liberties Union, argue that this order instills fear in communities. Hospitals like Houston Methodist and Memorial Hermann will comply by asking the citizenship question, but patients can decline to answer. Data will be reported quarterly starting in March.
