SUMMARY: A recent investigation by SeaD Consulting found that 82% of sampled restaurants in Biloxi, Mississippi, misrepresented their shrimp, with 39% of Gulf White Shrimp actually being imported. With 92% of establishments falsely advertising FDA-name-protected Gulf Royal Red Shrimp as lower-quality Argentinian shrimp, the deception significantly impacts consumers, who often pay premium prices for inauthentic dishes. Mislabeling undermines the domestic shrimping industry, misleads customers, and diminishes the value of genuine Gulf shrimp, making it harder for local shrimpers to compete. This fraudulent practice harms the entire supply chain, affecting everyone from producers to consumers.
