Surfside Beach meatball competition cooks up funds for autism awareness

SUMMARY: This weekend, the Best of the Beach Meatball Challenge will feature an exciting competition among restaurants, food trucks, caterers, and home cooks to determine the best meatballs. ABC 15’s Manin is live at Grumpy Mustache in Murrells Inlet, showcasing meatball preparation. One competitor shares their family recipe, passed down through generations, blending Russian and Italian influences. Made from beef and pork with red pepper flakes, the simple yet flavorful recipe has garnered popularity. The competition, benefiting the Champion Autism Network, takes place Saturday at the UPON parking lot on Surfside Drive, with tickets available on-site.

The 6th Annual Best of the Beach Balls Meatball Challenge is this weekend in Surfside Beach.

SUMMARY: Myrtle Beach is undertaking a beach renourishment project to combat erosion and elevating shorelines, funded by a $72 million contract. This initiative, led by the Army Corps of Engineers, aims to bring sand back to the Grand Strand beaches in response to storms. Dr. Paul Gaye from Coastal Carolina University highlights that while renourishment is a temporary fix, it does not address the rising sea levels exacerbating coastal flooding. As environmental changes accelerate, he suggests it may be time to consider long-term strategies beyond sand replenishment. The project is set to start this spring and will last approximately 18 months.

Throughout the spring, Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company will renourish the Grand Strand beaches under a $72 million contract from the United States Army Corps of Engineers Charleston District.

Some experts are questioning how long renourishment (adding sand to the beaches to repair damages after large storms) will be an effective method.
