SUMMARY: Sanctuary cities are jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities to protect undocumented immigrants from deportation and encourage them to report crimes without fear. Legal expert Andrea McNairy discusses the conflict between local and federal law enforcement regarding immigration. McNairy emphasizes the balancing act cities face in enforcing these laws while maintaining community trust.

An expected crackdown on illegal immigration beginning next year is being greeted with resistance from some sanctuary cities. In our Legal Lens, Brown & Crouppen attorney Andrea McNairy explains what the law has to say about potential conflicts between federal and local authorities.
