Supercomputer named after Mississippi Medal of Honor recipient

SUMMARY: The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) in Vicksburg has dedicated a new supercomputer in honor of Medal of Honor recipient Cpl. William “Kyle” Carpenter. The dedication ceremony was held at ERDC’s Information Technology Laboratory, and the HPE EX 4000 was named “Carpenter” after the Flowood native. Carpenter received the Medal of Honor for saving a fellow Marine’s life in Afghanistan. The supercomputer has the capacity to perform 9 quadrillion calculations per second and will support the Department of Defense’s most challenging computational tasks. The dedication was celebrated by Century Club Charities’ $1 million donation to Friends of Children’s Hospital.
