Kentucky’s bourbon industry worries as potential 50% EU-imposed tariffs loom
SUMMARY: The Kentucky bourbon industry faces potential 50% EU-imposed tariffs beginning March 31, a consequence of ongoing U.S.-EU trade tensions stemming from 2018 steel and aluminum tariffs. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear highlighted the economic impact, estimating losses of $580-$600 million during the initial tariffs, which were suspended in 2022. U.S. whiskey exports to the EU had surged 32% post-suspension. With distillers exporting over 95% of the world’s bourbon, Eric Gregory of the Kentucky Distillers Association warned that these new tariffs could severely harm the state’s economy. Other challenges for the industry include changing drinking trends and supply chain issues.
