Sunday 7am Tropical Update: Tropical Storm Debby to become hurricane
SUMMARY: Tropical Storm Debbie, with winds at 60 MPH, is set to strengthen into a hurricane today as it approaches North Florida, expected to make landfall early tomorrow in the Big Bend region. Heavy rain and gusty winds are affecting areas from Fort Myers to the Keys, with significant flooding anticipated across Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. Hurricane watches and tropical storm warnings are in effect, warning of gusts approaching 100 MPH. Meanwhile, another tropical wave east of the Windward Islands is being monitored for potential development as the tropics become increasingly active this August.
Debby’s path will steer to the northeast over Florida where a trough will be dropping between a break in high pressure. This setup should pull the system over Florida on Monday.
The steering pattern could then turn much weaker which would keep the system slowly nudging over Georgia and the Carolinas through the middle of the work week.
