Summer spotlight: Petrified Forest tells Mississippi’s story in a natural way
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Petrified Forest, located in Flora near Jackson, is a unique national forest in the southeastern U.S., presenting a natural history of Mississippi. Discovered in the mid-1800s, it opened to the public in 1963 under Bob and Shirl Schabilion. Formed around 36 million years ago through natural processes like flooding and glacial movements, the petrified logs are remnants of ancient trees, once over 100 feet tall. Visitors can explore the nature trail, view exhibits in the Earth Science Museum, try gem mining, or camp at the site. The forest also features a new pavilion for events and a gift shop with souvenirs.
