Study: Mississippi has sixth least staffed prisons in United States
SUMMARY: A recent study reveals that Mississippi has the sixth least staffed prisons in the U.S., with a ratio of 4.37 inmates per correctional officer. While the state employs approximately 4,500 officers for over 19,000 inmates, the average pay for these positions is low, despite a recent salary increase to around $40,392. Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Burl Cain claims the job provides competitive pay and benefits, and emphasizes the safety of state prisons, contradicting a Department of Justice report that cites chronic understaffing and inadequate conditions, leading to violence among inmates.
