Strange smell and vapors from Channelview chemical plant alarm neighbors
SUMMARY: Residents near the Case Solve chemical plant in Channelview were alarmed by reports of a strong, strange odor, prompting concerns for their safety. Firefighters and environmental workers responded, but homeowners felt left in the dark about the situation. An environmental health director assured that air quality tests showed safe levels, attributing the odor to a reacted chemical used in personal care products. Local residents were unaware of previous emissions issues or that they may have been exposed to harmful chemicals. State Senator Carol Alvarado plans legislation to enhance monitoring and penalties for chemical plants. The area has since reopened, with no threat reported.
