Stokes wants part of Jackson street to be renamed after late wife
SUMMARY: Part of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Jackson, Mississippi may be renamed after late Hinds County Judge LaRita Cooper Stokes. Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes plans to introduce a vote to rename a portion of the street as “Judge LaRita Cooper Stokes Drive” during the City Council meeting. The section of the road that would be renamed is near Lanier High School, where Cooper Stokes attended. Councilman Stokes hopes that the street signs and a museum honoring his wife’s legacy will inspire students to stay in school and not drop out. Cooper Stokes was the first Black woman elected to the bench in Hinds County and passed away in May 2023 at the age of 64.
