State to compensate former JPD officer Anthony Fox for wrongful conviction
SUMMARY: A former Jackson police officer, Anthony Fox, will receive over $75,000 from the state of Mississippi after the Court of Appeals overturned his conviction related to the death of George Robinson in 2019. Initially sentenced for culpable-negligence manslaughter, Fox argued he acted within his duties. The court found insufficient evidence for the conviction and noted that the jury had not been properly instructed. Following the reversal, Fox was rehired by the Clinton Police Department. The other officers involved were cleared, and the case cannot be retried unless prompted by the Mississippi Attorney General.

Hyde-Smith, Wicker praise agency’s decision to impose upped taxes on imported shrimp
SUMMARY: Mississippi Senators Cindy Hyde-Smith and Roger Wicker praised the federal decision to increase taxes on imported shrimp from Ecuador, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam due to unfair trade practices. The U.S. International Trade Commission found these countries had sold shrimp below market prices or benefitted from subsidies, harming the U.S. shrimping industry. Hyde-Smith emphasized that these actions hurt local Mississippi shrimpers and urged efforts to combat unfair competition. The new duties range from 2.24% to 221.82%, aimed at leveling the playing field for American producers. Wicker noted the domestic industry’s declining market share during rising shrimp consumption.
