SUMMARY: Mississippi is home to black bears, with the largest concentrations found along the Mississippi River in the Delta. The Black Bear Program of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks is working on getting a new count of these bears. Anthony Ballard, the program leader, advises residents to remain calm if they encounter a bear and to slowly move away, as black bears are typically shy. Bear sightings are rare in the area, but precautions should be taken to avoid attracting them with food. SUMMARY: Following the tragic death of 18-year-old Greyson Huff in a crash at the intersection of Highway 18 and Sunset Drive in Brandon, Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced safety improvements. These enhancements include rumble strips, a new flashing LED stop sign, and flashing intersection warning signs. Despite community requests for a traffic signal, state engineers determined it was not warranted due to data indicating that signals can make intersections more dangerous.
