SUMMARY: A movement is growing in Illinois for counties to separate from Chicago and Cook County to form a new state. Supporters cite high taxes and reduced influence in the state capital as reasons for secession. Voters in 33 counties, including those in the St. Louis region, have approved non-binding measures for separation, and at least 48 counties are actively working on the issue. Indiana has proposed absorbing these counties, but some groups, like the State of New Illinois, want to form a separate state. Illinois Republican Rep. Charlie Meier supports county autonomy but doubts federal approval for secession.

Legal Lens: Keeping paths clear during winter weather

Published

www.youtube.com – FOX 2 St. Louis – 2025-01-15 19:10:39

SUMMARY: Frustrations in the St. Louis area are rising due to icy roads and sidewalks. Attorney Andrea McNairy explains the legal responsibilities for snow and ice removal, noting that in Missouri, landlords are generally not required to clear it unless specified in the lease or if they have consistently done so in the past. Tenants should always check their lease for details. For homeowners associations (HOAs), failing to fulfill snow removal duties may result in breach of contract claims. However, legal recourse against municipalities for icy roads is limited, as they have protections against liability, especially during snow events.

This year’s winter storm has left more than a mess.

Legal questions have surfaced over the responsibility of keeping streets and sidewalks clear. Brown & Crouppen attorney Andrea McNairy answers some of the questions FOX 2 viewers have been asking.
