State Excellence Fund gifted $1.5 million as revenue sharing decision nears

SUMMARY:
Just under two weeks after Mississippi State’s Athletics Department received a multi-million dollar gift from an MLB agent and his spouse, another large sum of money is announced to be making its way to Starkville.
Bulldog Athletics Director Zac Selmon announced that a family of longtime program supporters and Starkville residents are gifting $1.5 million to the State Excellence Fund.
The gift will create a lasting impact on sports programs and provide vital resources for student-athletes, according to Selmon.
The State Excellence Fund aids in elevating sports at Mississippi State and supports the department’s future growth, especially in light of upcoming challenges like the House v. NCAA settlement.
This follows prior large gifts of $8 million, $3 million, and $1.75 million from anonymous givers in recent months.

AG Fitch joins peers in urging Congress to bar PBMs from owning pharmacies

SUMMARY: Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch, along with 38 other attorneys general, is urging Congress to ban pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) from owning pharmacies. Growing concerns among small pharmacy owners and consumers highlight PBMs’ influence on drug pricing, which can harm independent pharmacies and access to healthcare, particularly in rural areas. Fitch argues that PBMs leverage their power to manipulate drug prices and impose unfair terms on pharmacies. A recent push for legislation to regulate PBMs and prevent practices like spread pricing has stalled. The attorneys general’s letter to Congress seeks to protect consumers and small businesses from PBM exploitation.

NCAA adopts new football rules addressing fake injuries, overtime timeouts

SUMMARY: This fall, college football in Mississippi will see key rule changes, primarily targeting fake injuries. Players faking injuries to delay games will now result in their team being charged a timeout if a medical evaluation occurs after the next play’s ball is spotted. If no timeouts remain, a 5-yard penalty will be imposed. Additionally, overtime rules change, allowing one timeout per team starting at the third overtime. The NCAA will simplify instant replay announcements and introduce stricter regulations on scrimmage formations. Other changes include penalties for distracting signals and the option for coach-to-player communication in the Football Championship Subdivision.
