SUMMARY: The State Board of Education has voted to raise the minimum reading score required for third graders to advance to fourth grade, increasing it from 435 to 444 for this year and eventually to 454 over the next three years. Last year, only 9% of third graders failed to meet the minimum score. The vote passed 7 to 2, with some board members advocating for an even higher score based on feedback from educators. The increase aims to enhance reading proficiency among students and maintain educational standards as emphasized by District One representative Jackie Ziegler.

SUMMARY: The weekend weather forecast for Central Alabama is sunny and dry, with mild temperatures in the 70s. However, a cold front is expected to bring rain chances by early next week, starting Monday night into Tuesday. Tropical Storm Sarah is weakening as it moves into the Yucatan, but its moisture may influence weather patterns in the southern Gulf and be pulled northward by the upcoming front. After the front passes, colder temperatures and breezy conditions will prevail, resulting in chilly wind chills by the end of next week. Overall, expect cool mornings and nice weekend weather before the changes.
