State auditor, Mississippi State official clash over what DEI looks like on college campuses
SUMMARY: State Auditor Shad White criticized diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in Mississippi schools during the Neshoba County Fair, labeling them “indoctrination” and blaming Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann for not abolishing public funding for these initiatives. Mississippi State University Vice President Sid Salter defended DEI, arguing that it supports students’ success rather than promotes a political agenda. Salter contended that the university aims to create opportunities for diverse backgrounds. Amid political tensions, Mississippi’s public universities are restructuring their DEI programs in anticipation of potential legislative bans on such funding, which Gov. Tate Reeves is likely to support.
