State Appeals Court upholds attempted murder conviction in Oktibbeha Co.

SUMMARY: The State Appeals Court has upheld the conviction of Jessie Carpenter, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for shooting Antonio Hart in Starkville in 2019. The incident occurred after an argument between the two men, during which Carpenter pulled out a gun and shot Hart in the chest. Hart managed to escape and drove himself to the hospital. Carpenter was arrested a day later and admitted to the shooting. His lawyers claimed the judge gave improper instructions to the jury, but the Court of Appeals disagreed and upheld the conviction and sentence. Carpenter will not be eligible for parole.
