SUMMARY: Mississippi has made significant strides in addressing the opioid crisis, with opioid deaths declining for two consecutive years. The state’s efforts include stricter prescribing regulations and enhanced access to treatment for opioid use disorder. The opioid epidemic worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic, with isolation and limited treatment access exacerbating the issue. The introduction of fentanyl further complicated the crisis, leading to many deaths from counterfeit pills. Mississippi has focused on education and distributing Narcan kits to reverse overdoses. The Department of Health also provides free treatment options through its program for those without insurance or local providers.
