Gas tax going up in Mississippi
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers have approved a gas tax increase to generate funds for the Department of Transportation (MDOT). This marks the first gas tax increase since 1987, set to rise by 3 cents annually over the next three years. MDOT Executive Director Brad White emphasizes the need for additional funding as rising costs have hindered road and bridge projects. The increase is expected to provide approximately $300 million more for state and county agencies to enhance infrastructure, including widening projects on I-55 and Highway 25. The legislation awaits the governor’s signature to initiate the tax hikes.
