Stagville Plantation descendants have historic homecoming in NC
SUMMARY: At Stagville Plantation in Durham, descendants of enslaved ancestors gathered for a poignant homecoming 180 years after their relatives were forced to walk to a new plantation in Alabama. Families commemorated the brutal 500-mile journey made by 114 enslaved individuals under Paul Cameron. Emotional reflections highlighted the resilience of their ancestors, honored through their shared history. Duke historian Sydney Nathan discussed the journey from slavery to freedom, while genealogist Miles Kagin connected modern descendants to their ancestry. This gathering inspired pride and a desire to uncover more about their family’s past amidst a legacy of hardship and strength.
The historic journey, now known by the family as “The Trek,”‘ began in 1844 when enslaver Paul Cameron ordered 114 enslaved people to walk from Stagville to western Alabama.

California recently enacted a law requiring social media platforms to remove deceptive content related to elections swiftly. However, this law faces legal challenges over First Amendment rights. Experts warn that misinformation can severely impact disaster responses, urging the public to enhance their information literacy. Congress clears immigrant detention bill for Trump’s signature on his 3rd day in office • NC Newsline
SUMMARY: The U.S. House passed the “Laken Riley Act” with a 263-156 vote, expanding mandatory detention for immigrants charged with petty crimes. This legislation, supported by 46 Democrats, aims to strengthen deportation efforts, aligning with President Trump’s immigration priorities. Critics argue it enables mass deportations and lacks protections for immigrant children, as it mandates detention regardless of the circumstances. The bill also grants state attorneys general the power to challenge federal immigration policies, potentially straining resources, as enforcement is projected to cost $26.9 billion in the first year, surpassing the allocated $9 billion budget for ICE.
