St. Louis Board of Aldermen begin hearing on police technology
SUMMARY: St. Louis is implementing new regulations on police surveillance technologies, including nearly 650 cameras, gunshot detectors, and cell phone trackers. The Board of Aldermen’s Public Safety Committee is holding a two-day hearing to address concerns about the use of these technologies, particularly in relation to protesters’ rights. The police chief presented a detailed surveillance plan, emphasizing the need for transparency and justifications for technology use. Key measures require court approval for certain technologies, and officials aim to reassure residents about fair usage. The chief asserts the city’s commitment to responsible monitoring while fighting crime.
The use of police surveillance is now under surveillance itself in St. Louis. The impact of new regulations on police in the City of St. Louis is now unfolding at City Hall.Â

Missouri lawmakers unlikely to prioritize teacher pay as past efforts bring growth • Missouri Independent
SUMMARY: Missouri educators are increasingly staying in their positions, thanks to raised base pay and alternative certification measures. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education predicts future decreases in teacher vacancies, with retention increasing from 88.2% to 88.7% in the 2023-24 school year. However, legislative focus on recruitment has waned, with fewer bills addressing teacher needs. Recent laws increased minimum teacher pay and established funds for salary support, though challenges remain, such as salary compression. Future proposals include grants for retention and stricter regulations on administrative versus teacher salary expenditure to improve pay equity.

Illinois seeks compensation for residents exposed to radioactive waste
SUMMARY: Community leaders, including Congresswoman Nikki Burzynski and Mayor Tyrone Eccles, are advocating for compensation for residents exposed to radioactive waste from the former Dow Chemical Company site. Once a symbol of national strength, the area has become a source of health concerns due to years of radiation exposure. The site, which processed uranium and thorium from the nuclear weapons program, has been a dumping ground for radioactive materials. Despite the significant health impact, residents have not qualified for assistance under the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act. Burzynski pledged to continue efforts to include affected residents for compensation in upcoming legislation.
Some Metro East elected leaders are pushing for compensation for hundreds of residents who have been exposed to radioactive waste over the decades. On Sunday, those leaders announced they’re on a mission to do the right thing.
