Mississippi River named ‘most endangered’ amid potential federal cuts and rising flood risks

SUMMARY: The Mississippi River has been named “America’s Most Endangered River of 2025” by American Rivers due to growing environmental and policy threats. These include potential cuts to FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program under the Trump administration, which are crucial for flood risk management and community resilience. Local leaders, like Vicksburg’s Mayor, are already on high alert, coordinating with federal agencies to prepare for flooding. The river supports 50 cities, diverse ecosystems, and economic activity, making its health vital. Climate change exacerbates flood risks, highlighting the need for federal support to protect this essential resource.
