Speaker Johnson removes chair of powerful House Intelligence Committee
SUMMARY: House Speaker Mike Johnson removed Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, citing the need for a “fresh start” in the committee’s leadership. Turner, a vocal supporter of Ukraine and holding views that conflicted with President-elect Donald Trump’s policies, had clashed with Trump on foreign policy matters. Johnson, closely aligned with Trump, is expected to announce a new committee chair soon. Turner was praised by Johnson for his role in working with NATO, but his stance on intelligence and law enforcement issues did not align with Trump’s vision for the incoming administration.

Congress questions the FAA, US Army and NTSB over deadly midair collision in DC
SUMMARY: During a Senate committee hearing, NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy criticized the FAA for failing to identify alarming trends in aviation safety data, specifically highlighting 85 near-collisions at Ronald Reagan National Airport prior to a deadly midair crash that killed 67 people. Texas Senator Ted Cruz expressed concern over a collision alarm surge due to government testing of anti-drone technology. FAA officials acknowledged the need for improvement in safety measures, promising enhanced data analysis and stricter rules for aircraft location broadcasting. The military’s ongoing use of helicopters without location transmissions remains a major point of contention.
