SUMMARY: The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) has received a $4 million grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) as part of the EPSCoR program. The grant will fund a project called “Advancing Social and Environmental Equity through Plastics Research: Education, Innovation, and Inclusion” (ASPIRE). USM will study the impact of microplastics on marine and community health, as well as design new materials for plastic waste recycling. The goal is to develop a regional hub of plastic-climate-health research with a focus on promoting environmental and social equity. The grant period is four years.
