SUMMARY: President Yun Suk-yo of South Korea declared martial law in a late-night address, citing the need to protect the nation from “Communist forces,” marking the first such declaration since the end of military dictatorship in the 1980s. However, Parliament quickly overturned the declaration, deeming it invalid and pledging to uphold democracy. Yun faced significant backlash from both the opposition and members of his own conservative party amid a budget impasse with the Democratic party. Amid rising tensions, thousands of protesters gathered outside the General Assembly, demanding Yun’s impeachment and pressing for him to lift the martial law declaration.

SUMMARY: Pope Francis strongly criticized the Trump administration’s mass deportation plans, emphasizing that such actions degrade the dignity of migrants. In a letter to U.S. bishops, he highlighted the biblical basis for compassion towards migrants and cautioned against equating illegal status with criminality. Francis countered Vice President JD Vance’s defense of the deportation program, emphasizing that Christian love should embrace all individuals, not just those close to home. This marks a continuation of Francis’s advocacy for migrants, as he previously condemned Trump’s policies and stressed the need for nations to offer refuge in light of various crises.
