March On, Mississippi Students! | Our Mississippi Home
SUMMARY: On October 12, high school marching bands in Mississippi competed at the MHSAA and MBA Regional State Marching Evaluation across five locations. Bands were judged in areas such as drum major, color guard, and percussion, using a three-level rating scale. To qualify for the 2024 Marching Championships, bands needed an overall superior score, requiring at least two judges to rate them as superior. In the Region 1 competition at Tupelo, 33 bands performed, with 25 receiving superior ratings. Separate championship events for various classifications will be held throughout late October and November. Community support and unity among bands were emphasized.

Did You Know Mississippi State Houses a Presidential Library?
SUMMARY: The Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library at Mississippi State University houses significant artifacts, including a lock of Frederick Douglass’s hair and photographs from Grant’s funeral procession. The collection encompasses letters and writings from Grant, who served as a Union General during the Civil War and the 18th President of the U.S. It is paradoxical that a library dedicated to a Union hero is located in Mississippi, given Grant’s military campaigns against the Confederacy. Established in 2009, the library features photocopies of original documents and includes artifacts, making it a research hub and a museum for visitors.
