Some Mississippi legislative districts dilute Black voting power and must be redrawn, judges say
SUMMARY: A panel of federal judges has mandated Mississippi to redraw certain legislative districts, citing the dilution of Black voters’ power. The order stems from a 2022 lawsuit by the NAACP and Black residents. Jennifer Nwachukwu, an attorney for the plaintiffs, called the ruling a significant victory for Black Mississippians. The judges specified adjustments around DeSoto, Hattiesburg, Chickasaw, and Monroe counties, without creating additional districts. The Mississippi attorney general’s office is reviewing the ruling. Redistricting follows each census, reflecting population shifts. Similar lawsuits in states like Louisiana and Georgia have also contested racial fairness in district maps.

Mississippi man who murdered 2, including Millsaps football player, granted parole
SUMMARY: Lamar Phillips, convicted of the 1992 double murder of Bradley Dew, has been released from prison after serving over 30 years. Phillips and Cedric Morris killed Dew while he was driving home from his job. Phillips also killed another person shortly after. Despite current laws prohibiting parole for certain murder convictions, Phillips’ crime occurred before 1995, making him eligible. His release has sparked outrage, with former prosecutors questioning the decision. This follows another controversial parole decision in 2023, which freed James Williams, a man who dismembered his parents. Mississippi lawmakers have yet to act on parole reform.

Mississippi lawmakers have chance in special session to ease concerns caused by DOGE cuts
SUMMARY: Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is freezing nearly $400 million in federal funding across Mississippi, impacting various agencies. The Mississippi Department of Education faces a $137 million loss, while the State Department of Health is set to lose over $220 million for virus research and health center upgrades. State lawmakers, including Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann, are concerned but hopeful the funds may be unfrozen. Lawmakers must decide whether to replace the lost federal funding with state money, as cuts also affect Mississippi State University, addiction treatment programs, and Vicksburg National Military Park, with more agencies at risk.
