Some Mississippi legislative districts dilute Black voting power and must be redrawn, judges say
SUMMARY: Three federal judges have ordered Mississippi to redraw some legislative districts, asserting that the current ones dilute Black voters' power in three areas. The lawsuit, filed by the NAACP and Black residents in 2022, aims to ensure fair political representation for Black Mississippians. The court's decision mandates creating additional majority-Black Senate and House districts in specific counties. Such adjustments follow the 2020 census population changes. Attorney Tommie Cardin argued that Mississippi's current voter behavior is driven by party affiliation rather than race. Similar lawsuits in other states like Louisiana and Georgia have also addressed issues of Black voter representation.

SUMMARY: TCPS football had an 8-4 season, returning to the playoffs after a 2022 ban. They defeated Coffeeville but lost to Vardaman. Senior linebacker James Thomas said the loss motivates the team. SUMMARY: In Columbus, Mississippi, showers and thunderstorms are expected to persist Friday evening but will become isolated through the weekend. Friday night will see temperatures drop into the mid-70s. A weak front on Saturday may bring drier air, with temperatures in the lower 90s. By Sunday evening, a couple of showers are possible as moisture returns. Next week will see heavier rain and storms, especially in the early part of the week, with daily highs in the low to mid-90s, except for Wednesday, which will be cooler with highs in the mid to upper 80s.

SUMMARY: An inmate escaped from the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (CMCF) on July 5 but was recaptured wearing only a sheet shortly afterward. Authorities, including Rankin County deputies, the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP), and local police forces, were alerted around 12:45 p.m. after discovering blood and clothing on the prison's exterior fence. They established a perimeter and searched for the escapee. A suspicious individual in a nearby neighborhood was reported by a citizen, prompting the deployment of K-9 “Voodoo,” who quickly tracked and found the inmate in a lake. The Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) has taken the inmate back into custody and is conducting an internal investigation.
