Study highlights housing crisis in southern Indiana
SUMMARY: To address the affordable housing crisis in Southern Indiana, defining “affordable” as spending less than 30% of income on housing is essential. Jeffersonville City Council President Evan Stoner shares his personal experience with housing struggles, highlighting the need for solutions as local housing costs rise due to new job growth from companies like Amazon and Meta. With a third of households earning $50,000 or less, the demand for housing assistance is increasing, while the supply of affordable units is insufficient. Strategies must involve a holistic approach to develop more affordable housing within the next few years, including potential use of the old Census Bureau property.
